Newsworld jobs: I’m sure it’s just a coincidence…

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 10:59:10 PDT
Ten new CBC News jobs in Calgary were posted this morning. These, presumably, are part of the people given back to Alberta after CBC moved — er, “reconfigured” — CBC Newsworld programming from Calgary to Toronto: 4 reporter/editors Video-journalist 4 videgraphers Switcher-Director In what I’m sure is just a coincidence, only two positions are posted for Toronto this morning: Specialist in “Contract Management” Specialist in Automation

A news junkie’s dream …. or nightmare

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:46:47 PDT
I am a news junkie and admittedly if I had cable plus the extra TV I would probably have either CNN or CBC Newsworld on the whole time I’m in my room I jokingly call my office. So when I saw Brian Solis’ post about local broadcast news going social I was at first rather skeptical of the the idea; after all everything these days is having the social sticker slapped on its ass like it is going to be the road to instant riches or something. But when I clicked on the LiveNewsComeras.com link (go

Like My Hat? It's Made of Tinfoil!

Instead of dealing with the serious issue at hand, alleged election overspending, the Con's are as usual pointing fingers at the Lib's and anyone else they can think of as a diversion. One of their favourite attack dogs, Pierre Poilievre apparently sees a conspiracy here. Ottawa-area Conservative Pierre Poilievre (PWAH'-lee-ehv) goes further, accusing Elections Canada of inviting the Liberal party to watch the raid unfold. Note to Petey. The Lib's have said that they saw the story on Newsworl

Cons: RCMP Raid Was a 'Publicity Stunt'

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 13:10:43 PDT
Pass the tissues. Oh how I weep for those poor victims of the RCMP raid of the Cons' headquarters. Not. The tories are scrambling to paint themselves as being oppressed after yesterday's raid (which continues today). The problem is that they appointed the two Elections Canada officials they're now suing and that they applaud the RCMP (even protecting Zaccardelli to the bitter end) except when they're the targets of a legally-sanctioned warrant. And now, they're also trying to implicate the Li

Francis Ford Coppola now calling Buenos Aires home (The Post and Courier)

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 21:03:26 PDT
The maestro has gone gaucho. Francis Ford Coppola, 68, believes he's finally where he's supposed to be, a place where he can revel in financial and artistic control. Yes, Buenos Aires, Argentina, land of comparatively low production costs and much cultural ferment, especially the streets of this cosmopolitan capital. A city, one might add, with a large Italian community dating back to the early ...

CHI ’08 – a bite-size review

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:32:49 PDT
Joanna Bawa, editor of Usability News, has published a short review of the CHI conference. She appreciated that the main feeling of the conference was more closely allied to design, as clearly expressed by Irene McAra McWilliam and Bill Buxton. But it was hard to meet people: “My editorial gripe: no way to find out who was there or how to contact them, except by chance – immensely frustrating when so many great minds were within a few minutes’ walk. Surely we can find a way to make availabl

“Dr. Death” for Congress

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:33:27 PDT
In the news last month, in case you missed it, was the fact that Jack Kevorkian, retired pathologist and assisted suicide advocate, out of prison on parole, is planning to run for U.S. Congress from the state of Michigan. Kevorkian claims to have helped 130 people die. In the fundamental independent Baptist Church I grew up in, one of the (many) things we knew for sure was that “assisted suicide” was wrong, in every case, all the time, period. Now, things aren’t so clear to me as they we

Don’t Know Much About History…

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:37:22 PDT
Hah! Check this out: History News Network’s poll of 109 historians found that 61 percent of them rank Bush as “worst ever” among U.S. presidents. Bush’s key competition comes from Buchanan, apparently, and a further 2 percent of the sample puts Bush right behind Buchanan as runner-up for “worst ever.” 96 percent of the respondents place the Bush presidency in the bottom tier of American presidencies. And was his presidency (it’s a bit wishful to speak of his presidency in the past tense–afte

Stephanopoulos Did Hannity’s Bidding At Debate Re Obama Association With 60’s Radical. Ask Stephanopoulos To Query Hannity About HIS Relationship With Neo-Nazi

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:39:45 PDT
It looks as though George Stephanopoulos didn’t come up with those debate questions for Barack Obama about former 60’s radical William Ayers on his own but was coached by none other than Sean Hannity. The day before he co-hosted the Obama/Clinton debate, Stephanopoulos appeared on Hannity’s radio show. According to Democratic Underground, Stephanopoulos said he was taking notes while Hannity fed him conservative talking points with which to attack question Obama. If Obama’s relationship with Ay

Stop and smell the roses. While you still can.

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:40:54 PDT
Flowers are losing their smell. The discovery could be one of several factors in the "colony collapse disorder" that is wiping out honey bees around the world. Even a brief glance at the titles of the news articles on Wiki reads a bit frighteningly, as do the previous mentions here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
