EU says “Yes” to mile-high calls

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 22:42:35 PDT
Oh no. The European Commission said Monday that they plan to allow airlines to offer cellphone calls to passengers across the EU. This may sound like good news to cellphone carriers, airlines (who probably stand to gain a cut), and overzealous businessmen, but not to my ears. People (at least on the flights I’m on in the States) are already obnoxious enough on the tarmacs with their mobiles. Perhaps with some guidelines and/or rules, it may not be terrible, but I’m not holding my breath as airl

The Remote-Controlled H3

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 22:42:37 PDT
A car that can be controlled by a remote is quite possible but many look at such an idea to be foolish. However, that did not stop James Brighton, a student from the Cranfield University in Britain, to change his Hummer H3 into a remote-controlled vehicle. Yes, Brighton did such and he did it successfully. Experts who have taken a look at the converted full-sized Hummer H3 has said that converting the vehicle was not a really easy thing to do but Brighton did it really well. According to B

FOX News' Sexual Health section

Because it's not all politics. While we grumpily await - again - YouTube site maintenance (can't they do it during the wee hours??) we bring you FOX's answer to Dr. Ruth. I first stumbled on this section of the FOXNews.com website some months ago and wondered, does BillO know about this? He can't even handle the word "vulva," what's he going to think about "Living With Vulvodynia - Imagine living with intense chronic pain down there and having to give up sex." And it's a video!

On the Train

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 22:45:52 PDT
I’m sitting on a train, swaying back and forth as we glide northwards. We roll through forest filled with the bright new green of spring, past swollen creeks and gnarled branches heavy with moss. Small-town stations feature people huddled against the rain and the backs of dull apartment buildings, cheap because of their location near the incessant train whistles, painted in shades of tan and faded green. On the outskirts of these small towns, abandoned houses with sagging roofs have gardens fi

Just came across this list of links posted by John Bracken after he asked his readers for help in identifying the most influential books, articles, blog posts and the like about media, technology and the internet that they read in 2007. There is some very valuable material in here - articles by Henry Jenkins, dana boyd and Clay Shirky; reports on news impartiality, innovation strategies in the digital age and sharing, privacy and trust in a networked world; links to new, and not-so-new, books,

More on Karabakh, Much More

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 22:47:28 PDT
Not too long ago, Doug Muir wrote about why Nagorno-Karabakh may be coming soon to a front page near you. Back in the mid-1990s, I wrote something much longer on the conflict there. (PDF, ca. 500K) Money quote: Two of the least useful questions for consideration of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh are “Who’s right?” and “When did it start?” Both parties have legitimate claims, and both have legitimate grievances. The 1994 cease-fire, which was relatively new when I wrote the piece, has held

The Superintendent!

Rock, chalk, Jayhawk. What a stunning, come-from-behind victory for Kansas in tonight's National Championship game. Down nine points with 1:58 to go in regulation, Mario Chalmers and the Jayhawks went on a 22-8 run over the next seven minutes to cap a furious rally over a self-destructive Memphis squad that fulfilled everyone's expectations by choking from the free throw line late in the game. All-American Chris Douglas-Roberts and presumptive second pick in the NBA Draft Derrick Rose combined
